One of the tasks of wastewater treatment is to transfer pollutants from the dissolved form to the solid form and remove the solids from the liquid phase. Solids after dehydration (densification) are collectively referred to as sludge, which contains a variety of constituents and must be disposed of properly. Mud generated from wastewater treatment systems is typically in the form of liquid containing from 0.25 to 12% solids by volume depending on the technology of wastewater treatment applied. Of the components to be treated, sludge occupying the largest volume and treatment and disposal technology is one of the most complex issues in wastewater treatment. Sludge treatment facilities account for 40-60% of the total cost of construction of wastewater treatment systems and treatment costs account for about 50% of total system operation costs.
